What is discipleship?

Discipleship is the process of learning about the teachings of another, internalizing them, and then acting on them. Being a disciple means we are not just a student, but also a follower. This is an important distinction...a student is someone who just learns the teachings of another, while a follower is someone who learns and then acts on those teachings.

In the Christian faith, our teacher is Jesus Christ. To be a disciple of Jesus, we first have to learn what Jesus taught. But more importantly, we have to do what He taught. That is how we can determine if we have really committed our life to Christ...we start taking seriously His commands and actually doing them. Being a disciple of Christ means that we grow in the image of Christ becoming more Christ-like.

Once we learn and follow Christ's teachings, we have to pass them on to others!

"Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age." Matthew 28:19-20

How do I be a good disciple?

  • Read the Bible - The Bible is the Word of God. It is God speaking to us. It contains all the good news of what God has done, is doing, and will do for us.
  • Pray - Prayer is a conversation with God and grows our relationship with Him. It is one of the most important things to do as a Believer.
  • Attend Church - We attend church to praise and worship God together, to pray, to fellowship and serve with other Believers, and to be taught the Word of God.
  • Be a Witness for Him - It is important for Christians to testify to others about the wonderful things the Lord has done and is doing for them. We need to share with others the good news of salvation, deliverance, healing, and restoration that God provides.
  • Be a Good Steward - We are to be good stewards of what God has entrusted to us. We need to use all the Godly counsel we can to ensure that we work wisely with the finances, assets, and possessions that God has given to us.
  • Surrender One's Life - To follow Christ, we must deny ourselves and totally surrender ourselves to the will of God.
